“I heard you were here,” Dana said.

Jameson looked up from her desk. “Hey.”

“How are you JD?”

“Better than you, by the looks of it. You look wiped. Are things that bad?”

“If you mean in the Situation Room, I don’t know. I’m due there in fifteen minutes.”

Jameson pushed out her chair.

“What?” Dana asked.

“Shut the door.”

“JD, I have to—”

“Shut it, Dana. What’s going on? I know you. You look—beaten.”

“I’d rather talk about this later.”

“He left. Didn’t he? Steve. He left.”

Dana nodded. “Saturday.”

“Why didn’t you call one of us?”

“Because you needed to be home with your family. Both of you.”

“You are family,” Jameson said. “She’s going to know the minute she sees you something is wrong. Something beyond nuclear plants.”

“Do I look that bad?”

“No. No one else will suspect anything—other than you’re tired. We’re not talking about everyone or anyone. We’re talking about Candace.”

“Well, my drama will hold for another time.”

“Maybe so. You could’ve called. Hell, you could have come up with the kids.”

“I don’t think so. Candace told me about Jonathan’s news when she called me Saturday morning.”

“Dana, you matter just as much to both of us. You have to know that.”

“I do,” Dana said. “Look. I popped over here to see how you are—if there’s any news yet about Jonathan.”

“Not yet. I just hope Jonathan isn’t holding back because of the news.”

“You know he will hold back. So will Jonah.”

“I should call.”

Dana shook her head. “No.”

“Dana.”

“JD, trust me on this one. Okay? Let them decide when to call you or Candy. Trust me.”

Jameson sighed and nodded. “Have you talked to her yet this morning?”

“No. Luke came to find me.”

“Luke is here? I thought he was starting tomorrow.”

“I think Candy decided today would be better. I also know she asked Don to stay on for another two weeks with Luke.”

“That doesn’t bode well,” Jameson said.

“It’s smart. Listen, I need to get down there.”

“Dana?”

“Yeah?”

“Look, I know our friendship started through Steve. You really are my best friend. Please don’t shut me out. Okay?”

Dana smiled. “JD, I couldn’t shut you or Candy out if I tried. I need you both. Right now, my issues are in the back seat.”

Jameson nodded.

“I’ll tell her you’re here.”

“Thanks.”

Shit. Jameson pushed her laptop aside. “I can’t believe he left.”
